Jody Adams: Love in the Time of Cholera

[Super Chef received the following letter from Rialto‘s Jody Adams. Super ChefPartners in Health deal with the crisis in Haiti.]

Dear Friends,

You know how a simple phrase quietly enters your head, plays over and over again and eventually powers to the front of your consciousness: Don’t forget to call the dentist, or I can’t believe she loves me, or I can’t do this again. Eventually it compels you to act.

When I first heard about the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti, the title of Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s book took over my mind. Love in the Time of Cholera. I overlooked the book during my magical realism phase in college, I didn’t know the story, but there the words were. Love in the Time of Cholera.

After 50 years without a single case in the entire nation, cholera is back in Haiti, killing children and adults right now, the latest link in the chain of Haitian misery. Prevention is as simple as clean water.

On January 12, 2010 Rialto committed 100% of the proceeds from sales of our vegetable sides to Partners In Health’s STAND WITH HAITI campaign, established after the earthquake. With magnificent support from all of you, we have raised over $26,881 as of September 30. We have an ambitious goal of $50,000 to reach by December 31, 2010.

I now know what Love in the Time of Cholera means. Love is clean water. Love is the generosity of the Rialto community that continues to give over and over again, for justice, food, health care, and clean water to the poor. Love is you.

Thank you all.

Xox,

Jody
