July 1, 2012, came and out went foie gras in California — or did it?
Chances are, that like Chicago’s ban, the law will find itself revoked.
But even if not, chefs will find ways around the ban.
More importantly, does the ban open the door to more food laws?
Will foie gras foes move on to ban other kinds of meats?
Super Chef believes a number of alternatives might make better campaigns for PETA-philes:
- Wouldn’t it be great if they moved on to fight sugary drinks – joining New York’s push to tax soda and other sugar-laden drinks?
- Wouldn’t it be great if they fought transfat in grocery products?
- Wouldn’t it be great if they fought junk food vending machines in schools, and poor school lunches?
- Wouldn’t it be great if they fought to eliminate hunger and reduce obesity?
Super Chef calls on all the foes of foie gras to use their energy and political might to make changes in our diets that go beyond some specialty food for the elite.

That something else is more worth doing, does not imply that something is not worth doing.
Furthermore, there are plenty of people who are fighting for bans both on foods that require extra cruelty and on the great availability of unhealthy foods to vulnerable (young, poor, minority, &c) people. You’re just trying to distract from the issue at hand.
No. It would be great if they fought none of those things. I find it disgusting and hypocritical that you support choice for “some specialty food for the elite” but oppose it for low-class foods.
Foie gras is delicious and part of a rich culinary tradition. It’s also not that great for you in large amounts. But the important thing is choice.
Wouldn’t it be great if people were only allowed to eat tofu and algae? Even the people who would die of allergic reactions.
Yeah, right. IMO, the people who think it should be illegal to be anything but Vegan should encounter a law making eating meat mandatory, and see how they like the government messing with their diet.
Wouldn’t it be great if people were just allowed to eat what they want? I guess that could happen in some mythical free country. One without nannies protecting their tastes and banning those of others.
