Four Seasons: Happy Birthday, Jackson Pollock!

Jackson Pollock cooks

If what you know about Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock is the Ed Harris movie or Hans Namuth‘s photographs, think – or rather taste – again. It turns out Pollock and his wife, the artist Lee Krasner, were foodies and accomplished cooks who gave dinner parties in their Springs, Long Island home. They also kept a book of menus that gives insight into their lives as artists and iconoclasts.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth Julian Niccolini and Alex von Bidder of the Four Seasons in New York are celebrating with a commemorative dinner featuring dishes from Pollock’s book and art and photographs of his studio and home. The Four Seasons is in the Seagram Building, designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson – at exactly the same time as Abstract Expressionism was at its height. From the press release:

Taking inspiration from their menus that they carefully recorded in their personal cookbook, our chefs are preparing a delicious meal of Pollock’s favorites. We’ve also invited Helen A. Harrison, the director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, to share with you insider details about Pollock’s private side And to properly celebrate his centennial birthday, you will be surrounded by Pollock’s artwork, and photographs of his home and studio, so we can feel his presence as we enjoy the delicious dishes he loved.
