Problem: You’ve got a late December or January birthday that year after year gets less attention than it deserves.
Solution: Get a copy of Fiona Cairns’ Birthday Cakes (Rizzoli 2012) for someone in your family or among your friends. Maybe they’ll get the message that despite all the November and December celebrations, your birth deserves more attention.
Maybe you should also dog-ear a few pages of your favorite cakes – hint, hint, nudge, nudge. Pick one with a luscious photograph by Laura Edwards. There is a exotic Turkish Delight Meringue (p. 35) filled with raspberries and flavored with rosewater and pistachio. If you don’t mind winter strawberries – then the cover cake, the Strawberry and Elderflower Cake (pp. 38-9) would set the right tone of celebration. What about Very Lemony Meringue Cake (p. 61) with a lemon curd filling and meringues nestled between the candles? The book also has cakes better suited for your 6-year old, like Pirate Galleon (p. 84) or Fairies on Cupcakes (p. 105) or a Fantasy Castle (p. 129) for a very pink birthday girl.
Whatever cake you choose, Fiona will make sure your chosen baker will be able to carry it off – and make it the centerpiece of a well-deserved birthday celebration!
