Bob’s Red Mill: Spar for the Spurtle

Oatmeal, that most digestible and comforting of breakfast foods, inspires more than Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Summer seems like the most popular time for companies to start contests – Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods has a contest for most unique recipe using Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. Steel cut oats or pinhead oats take longer to cook and have a more hearty bite then regular rolled oats. The contest called Spar for the Spurtle –a spurtle is a Scottish kitchen tool dating back to the 15th century that is traditionally used to stir porridge and prevent it from becoming lumpy – calls for a video demonstrating a unique recipe, with a deadline of July 30.

Three finalists will be flown to Portland, OR, to compete in a live cook-off. The winner of that cook-off will travel with the Bob’s Red Mill team to compete in the 18th Annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Scotland.

The recipes can be savory or sweet.

Bob’s Red Mill won the Golden Spurtle in 2009, the first American to win – and they want to win again. Come up with an inspiring recipe and video and you could be eating Haggis in October in Carrbridge.
