Are food festivals and gastronomic events a measure of the maturity of a food scene?

If they are, then this may be the year of Mexican Cuisine.

Check out Mesamerica 2014. It consists of three events that promote Mexican food all across that huge country while opening up that cuisine to the world.

There are three events scheduled in 2014 as well as a restaurant week, which means there are plenty of opportunities to coordinate a vacation with some eye opening dining and discussion. Here is a list of the festivals and invited chefs:

MESA MACO February 5-9th, Mexico City, DF
In conjunction with the art festival Zona MACO, chefs from the Mexican Cooking Collective will create a pop-up restaurant in the heart of Centro Banamex.

MESA ABIERTA March 20-23rd, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
This is a 4-day festival in the city that UNESCO named “Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” It includes producers, distributors, artisans, chefs, and journalists.

MESAMÉRICA Street Food and Urban Expressions – May 20-22nd, Mexico City, DF
This is the premier event with international chefs, culinary schools, and a pastry congress. Mesamérica will celebrate urban expressions and unlock Mexico’s secrets as one of the leading street food capitals of the world.

More than 30 participating restaurants are involved in restaurant week for the members of the Mexican Cooking Collective.
