Susan Spicer’s Bayona: 20 Years

Cooking schools may have grown in number and popularity in the past few years, but they have not replaced the importance of mentoring by chefs of their sous chefs and kitchen staff. The longer a chef is in business, the more he/she develops into a great teacher as well as a successful restaurateur.

Chefs need to celebrate longevity in the quixotic world of restaurants. Jody Adams celebrates it in her recent article for Super Chef and Susan Spicer celebrates her 20 years at her restaurant, Bayona, with two days of wine tastings, food demonstrations and guests.

Perhaps the most inspired events feature Boyona sous chef alums, mentored by Susan. These include chefs John Harris, Kate Applebaum, Greg Collier, Donald Link, Ashley McGee, Michelle Nugent, Ronald Carr, Stephen Hassinger, Jody Bush, Megan Roen and Jim Morris. Two events will feature these sous chefs:

  • June 14, 2010 – Pleasures of Dining: Susan Spicer leads a seminar with winemakers and her sous chefs that includes lunch and cocktail reception
  • June 15, 2010 – Grand Gala: More chefs and a special dinner
